5 Breathwork Techniques to Calm Anxiety in Minutes

Five simple, science-backed breathing techniques you can use anywhere to calm anxiety and reset your nervous system fast.

4 min read

When anxiety spikes, your breath is the fastest tool you have. These five techniques help settle your nervous system in minutes, and you can use them anywhere, no app required.

1. Box breathing

Inhale for 4, hold for 4, exhale for 4, hold for 4. Repeat four rounds. Used by athletes and first responders, box breathing steadies a racing mind quickly.

2. Extended exhale

Breathe in for 4 and out for 6 to 8. A longer exhale signals safety to your nervous system, easing the fight-or-flight response almost immediately.

3. Physiological sigh

Take a normal inhale, add a second small sip of air on top, then a long slow exhale. Two or three of these can take the edge off in under a minute.

4. 4-7-8 breathing

Inhale for 4, hold for 7, exhale for 8. A favorite for winding down and for falling asleep when your mind will not stop.

5. Grounding breath

Breathe slowly while naming five things you can see, four you can hear, and three you can feel. Pairing breath with the senses pulls you out of anxious thoughts and into the present.
